Judge Manning is kind to lawyers and litigants, but does not effectively manage even simple trials. She gets pushed around by loudmouth lawyers and frequently changes her mind midstream.

Good, fair. Not brilliant, but does not have to be for most cases. Great at trial. Let's you try your case, but does not tolerate 'see if it sticks' arguments or games. Has a fantastic knowledge of trial evidence and procedure. If you have to try it, you want her.

'The worst judge in the Northern District?' Spoken like someone who has never appeared before Norgle, Der-Yeghiayan, Marovich or Lindberg. She is no Posner or Easterbrook, but neither is she the worst judge in the district. I wouldn't want to have a patent or securities case with her, but if you most a straightforward civil matter or any type of criminal matter and if you want to go to trial, then she is your judge. She runs a smooth trial and let's you actually try your case. Try getting that with some of the so-called 'smarter' judges in that building. For instance, Pallmeyer is rumored to be better, but she will screw up a jury trial if you gave her a complete outline of what to do and when to do it. And let's not forget the 'wunderkind,' Mark Filip. Allegedly retired because he was 'bored.' Apparently Filip was so bored that he couldn't be bothered to do simple things like rule on motions. Brilliance is worthless when you are too lazy to demonstrate it. I'll take Judge Manning over anyone who Poster 6862's deems to be a 'better judge.'

Unfailingly good to the lawyers. Actually treats us like human beings who have lives and responsibilities that might be more important than the judge's desire to move things along on an arbitrary schedule. Trying a case with her is so pleasant it almost doesn't feel like practicing law.

Without question, the worst judge in the Northern District in civil matters. Just not smart. Her lack of intellect is matched only by her stubborn refusal to acknowledge when she is in over her head.

She's likeable and works diligently enough but she's not wise enough to be a competent federal trial judge. I can't see her doing much with a complex case, but I know she'd try. In fact, I've seen her try.

Good judge. She gets the law right 95% of the time and sets reasonable dates for discovery, dispositive motions, etc. Has no ego and doesn't allow herself to be fooled by posturing.
