I had this judge in my case. He was very fair and thoughtful. He took everything into account in my case. While I certainly didn't want to do time, I feel what I got was fair. While out on supervised release, he imposed a couple of restrictions on me, which I feel have made me a better person

A terrific judge. Takes his job very seriously and agonizes over decisions. This leads to his one fault: he's slow getting opinions out. Perhaps better suited for the appellate bench for this reason.

My experience was the opposite of the commenters below. Judge Chatigny was fair, thorough, and gracious in a case I tried before him, and has been the same in various pretrial matters.

Thinks it is OK to shut the press out of the courthouse and out of hearings.

Did not handle well an administrative complaint having to do with supervising staff. (Part of his role as chief judge.) Hard to tell whether he was oblivious to, hoodwinked or approved of the inappropriate behavior some staff members were engaged in.

An odd, odd man. Takes his role as a manager more seriously than he does his role as a jurist. Perhaps he should just become chief clerk and leave the law alone.

Judge Chatigny has been angling for a seat on the Second Circuit since the day he was appointed. He is ambitious, vain and self-righteous, given to petulant outbursts when things aren't just so. He should perhaps be an appellate judge as his demeanor is unsuited to the trial court.

He had what it took to be a great federal judge but once he became Chief Judge, he became more tyrannical - sees himself has entitled to a far greater role in how lawyers litigate their cases and represent their clients than most lawyers believe is appropriate - became too managerial, burdening lawyers with bureaucratic duties. Is a bright guy but his view of his role as judge brought him disrepute among the bar. Many would like to see him go.
