This judge has a phenomenal legal mind. His straightforward, no-nonsense approach is refreshing. He is one of the few judges who doesn't put up with the typical Madison County/St. Clair County political shenanigans. If there's any chance to settle a case, he'll get it done (and done by lunchtime). And if there's no realistic chance to settle, then he won't waste your time or his in putzing around. Both parties can get a fair shake from him (which is not necessarily what the attorneys in this district are accustomed to).
