Pleasant enough, but he had only limited federal practice experience before becoming a Magistrate Judge. He doesn't have much of a working knowledge of rules of evidence or federal practice. He used to write overlong decisions that were mostly intended to impress as to his scholarship, but that is less of an issue now as it appears he has become resigned to the fact that he won't be an Article 3 judge any time soon.
