Judge Ellison displays a largely unique combination of scholarship and basic kindness to parties, their counsel and witnesses. He is terribly bright and this likely leads to a level of self-confidence that precludes the perceived necessity to belittle and berate lawyers who appear before him. Instead, while he can enforce the rules when appropriate, Judge Ellison consistently casts himself in the role of assisting the parties in problem resolution in a fair and productive manner.
