I went to trial before Judge Bryan in 1997 for smuggling hashish...tons of it...and because of the USSG was sentenced to 30 years. Twelve years later I managed to get back in for resentencing and he let me go that very day. I had 14 years left to do, and that was with good time. Today, 6.5 years after my release he stopped by my business. Said he was in the area and wanted to say hi (I'm in CA, he's from WA). I don't know how he knew where I was, or why he even remembered me. He's almost 80 years old, been a Judge for 40 years, still an active Senior Federal Judge, and has had thousands of cases and defendants. I was stunned. He's a kind and compassionate man and, yes, he does know the law and respects it no matter what. His stopping by to wish me well was like he set me free once again. God Bless him.
