Judge Shadur is definitely one of the smartest federal judges in this country. I consider myself honored to have had the privilege to appear before him. That said, he clearly has one bias: he hates summary judgment motions. He will grant them, but only after giving you a speech about how lawyers don't understand the purpose of summary judgment, and frequently abuse the motion. He also tends to be very sympathetic to plaintiffs. But overall, he is very fair and I would have him as my district judge any day of the week.
