During my nearly 30 years as an FBI Special Agent, I had several criminal cases that landed in his courtroom. Hughes is the textbook example as to why we should not allow federal judges to have a life time appointment. He is awful and I observed him to be senile. Here is my suggestion: Before anyone is considered to serve as a USDJ, they must have been employed in law enforcement or as a prosecutor for at least five years. Hughes is clueless with respect to the challenges and obstacles that federal law enforcement face every day. He has called the FBI “jackbooted thugs”. If Hughes’s daughter was kidnapped, who do you think he would call? The FBI of course. One of his erroneous comments that I observed was that law enforcement cannot lie. Really? DOJ and FBI policy does allow, in certain circumstances, agents to lie. If agents could not lie, how the heck do you operate a Group I or Group II (undercover operations). In those cases, the undercover agent must lie obviously. Hughes is non compos mentis and needs to retire!
