In am convinced that in a previous life Shadur was Yoda. He is scary smart, diligent and respectful. Because I am in private practice primarily representing defendants, conventional wisdom dictates that I should not like him. But I love drawing him because he will say things from the bench that will help control client expectations. Yes, he gives people the summary judgment speech but what people often forget is that he WILL grant summary judgment if there is a basis to do so. Indeed, some plaintiff's lawyers get completely lazy after drawing him because they assume that Shadur will never kick a case. That is simply not true. He does it all the time, but for the RIGHT reason and not to simply get rid of a case.
