Judge Fitzgerald was reported to have been the first openly gay judge in the Centeral District of California, in Los Angeles. This begs the question: who were the first not-openly gay judges? The answer is two Reagan-appointed judges: in 1982, Pamela Ann Rymer, and in 1985, Stephen V. Wilson. Rymer then went to the Ninth Circuit, and was the first gay judge there, and now is deceased; Wilson continues on the Central District bench.
