She doesn't bother reading plaintiffs' papers in dispositive motions and does research to help defendants in civil cases. Horrible. Totally agree with comments below!

Easily the worst judge on the SDNY for more reasons than can be named. Regularly does absurd things sua sponte and is readily willing to deny litigants due process if she is bored or wants to speed things along. I would not be surprised if she is the most-frequently reversed on appeal judge in the Second Circuit. What I have observed of her courtroom demeanor is completely unprofessional. In the most-recent criminal trial I had in front of Judge Batts, even the prosecutor commented that she was showing clear favoritism for the government. I have heard that she has openly stated that she will give an advantage to women and minorities in her courtroom. When she does not understand an issue, her default response is to simply rule for the side she thinks should win, irrespective of the rules of procedure or evidence. The only good news is that she is now on senior status, so we may not have to worry about drawing her for new cases much longer.

I suspect Judge Batts may be intelligent, but you'd never know it because her arrogance and laziness override whatever smarts she may have. She will sit on your motion for half a year, then issue a short, borderline nasty ruling. If you don't like being a judge, get off the bench.

My employment discrimination case was three years old and Judge Batts did not give me a trial date. When I wrote to my Senator to request a trial date she passed my case to another judge.

I was a pro-se plaintiff in a civil rights case against federal police unlawfully invading my NY home due to a North Carolina State's Reliable Confidential Informant. Judge Batts' order granted Gov's motion to dismissed my civil rights case under Qualified Immunity legal grounds WITHOUT Judge Batts conducting Qualified Immunity Test under oath against federal police and WITHOUT Judge Batts requiring Gov to produce North Carolina State's Confidential Informant as evidence in NY's federal court. I will be filing a Complaint in the US Congress against Judge Batts soon. Judge Batts' conduct is being sued in the United States Court of Federal Claims which is being reviewed in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington DC.

I am puzzled by the negative comments posted above. Judge Batts has been, in my experience, engaged and efficient. She treated all counsel with respect and fairness.

Judge Batts substitutues cheating for scholarship. When a case comes on her docket that she doesn't want to try, she simply issues a 'sua sponte' Order, even if the statutory time frame has not expired. Will think nothing of re-opening closed cases to issue censorship injunctions. Patently illegal denial of due process tactics deployed only by the judicially illiterate.

Whilenot a lawyer, I understand quite a lot about the law. Last year, I sat on a jury presided over by Judge Batts -- an exceptionally difficult case involving international drug trafficking that involved three weeks of testimony by scores of witnesses with complex legal issues at play. I admired her fairness, especially her close attention to the rights of the defendent, her knowledge of the law and ability to explain points to the jury in simple English, her ability to control the court room, her insistence on a certain decorum, her willingness to lighten the mood now and then, and last but by no means least, her firmness in confronting -- gently but archly -- a witness whose testimony was heading in a distinctly homophobic direction. I've heard she has been on Obama's short list for the Supreme Court and sincerely hope he considers her strongly for the next opening.

I have a high opinion of most SDNY judges but Judge Batts is an exception. Cases languish literally for years while she waits to decide straightforward motions. Routinely prejudges matters and has been known to order counsel not to file a motion under penalty of sanctions, without even seeing the legal arguments first. Not sure if she has a pro-plaintiff bias or is simply bad.
