An arrogant bully. Not interested in reaching the correct decision but only proving he is smarter than you. Terrible judicial temperament focused on all the wrong things.

This man believes in Justice and Due Process. It is difficult to list all the benefits to the Justice system this man has contributed. I believe his greatest contribution is opening up the entire 9th Circuit to Video taping. That shed;s light on everything and gives the weaker litigants a chance. Good on him!

Appeared before him at least 8 times. Generally well-prepared, but seemingly has his mind made up by oral argument. Often gruff with counsel, especially when you don't have a direct answer to a direct question. Although no-nonsense, has a sense of humor and has responded (at least with me) to a more casual approach. Know your key case names and record citations. Although knowing what they are, he has asked me for either a case or record cite just to test me. If the issue is interesting, has let oral argument go substantially longer than scheduled. Doesn't mind if you disagree with him, as long as you can cogently explain it, and seems willing to listen as long as you are sincere and not just 'impassioned.' No BS welcomed.

He is inquisitive, knowledgeable, extremely intelligent, street smart, and perhaps the best federal judge in the United States.
