I have a family member who was a defendant and appeared before Judge Gertner for sentencing. She was very fair considering what the Government wanted for a sentence. She saw that the defense attorney was not prepared and how it could have harmed the defendant. Instead, she sentenced on the low end of the guideline, allowed credit for time on house arrest, explained her decision in detail and had the best interest of justice for all involved as first priority. Even though there was prison time given, I found her very fair, thoughtful and an excellent judge.

Judge Gertner is an excellent Judge: fair, open minded, courteous, unflappable, extremely hard working. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of the rules of procedure and evidence. And, she and her staff are pleasant to work with.

Had the great privilege (some years ago) of appearing before her as an out of state lawyer. She was well prepared, fair, courteous, respectful, appropriate, experienced, and smart as hell. In sum, she lived up to the great reputation I had heard about when I inquired about her before my first appearance.
